Research

Prior to 1999 little was known about the waters of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. Since this was Reservation land, and the state, county, and city lack jurisdiction, a water quantity and quality data void existed.

During 1999 exploratory water quality sampling was conducted to determine if impairments existed. It was discovered that nutrients were the primary issue of concern. Numerous baseline and individualized studies have been undertaken in an effort to assess the source of impairment. In addition to nutrients, metals from parking lots and salts from deicers were found in elevated levels in some water bodies.

Because the area around the reservation is becoming more urban, it was thought that water quantity may have an effect on natural resources. Studies were completed and more are under way that examine how drainage systems are impacted by storm water runoff.

In the last few years additional investigations have begun that look at the effect of best management implementation in the watershed. The SMSC has restored prairies, mitigated for wetland loss and installed green roofs and pervious pavement. How these projects ameliorate the impacts from storm water is of research interest.
