The SMSC has a facility to gather and process hazardous waste from Community members and other SMSC enterprises (see [Facility Location] tab). Workers categorize and consolidate the material at the facility using safe handling and storage methods. Some material we get can be difficult to process because there are no labels, the container is so old it pre-dates modern labeling requirements, or it is just not hazardous and can be thrown away. These materials may be rejected simply because we do not know what it is, and it is costly to get the material identified. Land staff have developed a guideline document that should help determine if your products are hazardous, who to contact for a drop-off, and what procedures need to be completed to execute that drop-off (see [Guidelines] tab). Also, we have taken some pictures to identify some examples of what material is readily accepted and what materials may be rejected (see [Examples] tab).
The Business Council tasked the Land Department with managing hazardous waste generated on the SMSC. Please consider that your first choice for disposal of any particular product is to use it for its intended purpose. Only purchase what you need for a particular job and completely use the product on the job. The Household Hazardous Waste Program has three goals:
The SMSC Household Hazardous Waste Facility is located on the south side of the Golf Course
Maintenance Building (2222 Trail of Dreams) east of Playworks. Drops may be made by
appointment. Please call the Land Department at 952-496-6136 to schedule a drop-off. All drops
will require that a member with a SMSC ID accompany the material and complete a Hazardous
Waste Drop-Off Form that will help Land Staff identify the material for proper handling and
disposal. All containers must have tight fitting lids and be marked according to their contents.
Please properly store your hazardous materials. For instance, do not allow rainwater in your used
motor oil containers. Land Department staff may reject products that are not in suitable containers
or ones that have unknown or mixed products. SMSC will charge nominal fees for commercial
quantities of hazardous materials.
The Land Department plans to operate a Re-Use Center where unused or barely-used paints and other products will be made available to members and staff for free. We will have a website page that lists the items in the near future.
