Land department staff manage the SMSC’s compost facility (see [Facility Location] tab). A compost facility is a storage location for the materials that are the ingredients of compost and where a composter creates an ideal environment for fauna that naturally break up organic matter. The resulting compost is a nutrient rich soil-like material used for a variety of uses including top dressing soil to add nutrients, erosion control, a mixing agent for controlled seed germination, landfill cover, and wetland construction. The facility has a dual purpose creating compost from organic material and storing reusable items like clean fill, boulders, rocks, black dirt, sand, class 5, and brush/timber. The overall goal of constructing and managing the facility is to create useable products including finished compost and re-usable materials for department staff and community members.
The compost facility accepts material from all SMSC enterprises, community members, and contractors upon request and examination of the material (see [Photos] tab). Acceptable materials include but are not limited to grass clippings, leaves, sod, dead plant material (e.g. potted annuals), manure, clean compost and brush no greater than 8 inch in diameter and stumps must be removed. Re-usable material mentioned above is also acceptable but will need to be inspected. Unacceptable materials include but are not limited to mixed materials, construction wastes, cement washouts, plastic bags, treated wood products, lumber, old furniture, concrete/asphalt/brick, dirts, rocks, trash etc. To schedule a drop-off please contact the Land and Natural Resources department at 952.496.6136 and fill out the drop-off form (see CompostDropOffForm.pdf).
Public Notice
The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community plans to construct and operate the Organics Recycling Facility. The facility will replace the existing facility located at 2260 - 140th street NW, northwest of the intersection of County Roads 42 and 83. The new facility will be operational in September 2011 and will be located south of County Road 16, east of County Road 83, and west of McKenna Road in exsting farm field. Customers will access the site from County Road 83. The facility will utilize state-of-the-science methods to process organic items such as leaves, grass, brush, and food residuals into compost, a valuable soil amendment for growing plants. Two organizations, the U.S. Composting Council (http://compostingcouncil.org/factsheets-and-free-reports/) and Biocycle (http://www.jgpress.com/biocycle.htm) provide much information regarding organics processing operations including benefits toward reducing greenhouse gases. Please contact the SMSC Land Department (952-496-6136 with any questions and also check the Land Department website (http://www.smscland.org/compost.html) for regular updates on the status of this project.
